Homemade Enchilada Sauce Recipe

Ingredients:

  • 2 tablespoons vegetable oil
  • 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
  • 4 tablespoons chili powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon cumin
  • 1/4 teaspoon oregano
  • 2 cups chicken or vegetable stock

Instructions:

  1. Heat the oil in a saucepan over medium heat. Add the flour and stir together over the heat for one minute.
  2. Mix in the seasonings – Add the chili powder, garlic powder, salt, cumin, and oregano. Stir together for about 30 seconds.
  3. Add the stock slowly, whisking constantly to remove lumps. Reduce heat and simmer 10-15 minutes until thick.
  4. Taste and adjust the seasonings, if necessary. The sauce should be thick enough to coat the back of a spoon.
  5. Use immediately or refrigerate in an airtight container for up to one week.
